If you are seeking a new and different way to enjoy a weeknight in downtown Raleigh, the Raleigh Night Market should be on your list! This recurring event has something for everyone, including food, entertainment, and a variety of stalls featuring the wares of local artisans. The event runs from 5:30 to 10:30 pm on selected dates from March through November.
Once I heard about the Raleigh Night Market, I looked forward to it for several days. Disappointed to have to have missed the March event, we attended on April 25. We arrived relatively early. The market was busy, but there was plenty of room to walk the streets, chat with the vendors, and enjoy the weather. With a small crowd of people we watched a musician sing and strum an acoustic guitar. We ate pizza at Vics and enjoyed their outside seating. Always looking for fun and unique gifts, we were impressed with the market’s unique offering, from handcrafted wooden signs, toys, and stuffed animals, as well as artistic prints and paintings, jewelry and clothing! Vendors were eager to chat, children played cornhole, pups enjoyed treats, and friends greeted one another warmly. Although we did not stay late, I imagine that after the sun sets, the extended evening event evolves into an unexpected weeknight street party!

Also good to know:
- The all-ages Raleigh Night Market is free to attend!
- The event has not been closed to pets, so it is dog friendly! A good place to enjoy a walk and to socialize with your pup. Several vendors had water and treats, and of course, we always enjoy the staff at Unleashed! https://www.unleashedmutt.com
- For those who enjoy a drink, alcohol is served. Because the streets are closed and the event is confined, with proper identification and a wristband, attendees of legal drinking age can shop, enjoy, AND imbibe.
And before I forget . . . City Market!
Having opened in 1914, today City Market is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts a collection of locally owned restaurants and shops. City Market also hosts a variety of events, including the Raleigh Night Market. I actually recommend a trip to City Market at ANY time to see how this small section of community embraces Raleigh’s growth while paying tribute to the past. You can find out more about City Market on its website at https://historiccitymarket.com . Content on this website includes City Market’s current business listing as well as a brief and fascinating review of its history. Things to do at City Market:
- Enjoy a game, live music or trivia night at Woody’s! And chicken wings. Yep! Always the chicken wings! www.woodyscitymarket.com
- Have an old-world slice of pizza at Vic’s (like we did!) http://www.
vicsitalianrestaurant.com - Sample authentic country cooking and eat a GIANT hotcake with plenty of syrup at Big Ed’s first of three restaurant locations right in the heart of City Market. Is there a difference between a hot cake and pancake? I searched the web, and there seems to be some disagreement! Some people think they hotcakes and pancakes are the same thing with the words being synonymous. Others insist a hotcake is thicker, fluffier, and more delicious.
